More Than Miles: Why National Aviation Day Hits Home in Saskatchewan

NATIONAL AVIATION DAY
NATIONAL AVIATION DAY

February 23rd is National Aviation Day—a day to celebrate the first powered flight in the country. But across the prairies, aviation isn’t just a chapter in a history book. It supports society, builds the economy and ensures a future for all.

For Rise Air, today isn’t just about the mechanics of flight; it’s about the people those wings connect. From the uranium mines that power the world to the remote communities where we deliver groceries, medicine, and connect family members, aviation is the bridge that makes the North possible.

Rooted in the North: As a 100 per cent Indigenous-owned airline, our story is deeply intertwined with the land we fly over. When we look out the cockpit window, we don't just see terrain; we see our communities' homes and lands.

Every flight we take—whether it's a scheduled flight to Fond-du-Lac or a critical medevac mission—is a commitment to the socio-economic health of our region.

Celebrating Our Crew: Behind every takeoff is a team of more than 300 dedicated professionals. Our pilots, engineers, and ground crews (shoutout to our partners at Snowbird Aviation Services!) work through the toughest of winters and the balmiest summers to keep people moving.

Today, we celebrate them. We celebrate you—the customers who trust us with your journeys. And we celebrate the spirit of the North that keeps us all looking toward the horizon.

Happy National Aviation Day.

Rise Air welcomes Canada's first ATR 72-600

ATR 72 600 flying

Rise Air, the Indigenous-owned airline providing essential services across Saskatchewan, has taken delivery of its first ATR 72-600 aircraft, becoming the launch customer for the latest generation ATR -600 series in Canada. This aircraft is the first from a three-aircraft agreement signed in November 2024, with two additional brand-new ATR 72-600s to join the fleet under lease in 2026. This delivery marks a major step in Rise Air’s fleet renewal programme and reinforces its commitment to enhancing year-round connectivity for remote communities.

The arrival of the ATR 72-600 comes right after Transport Canada certified the ATR 42-600 and ATR 72-600 on 27 November 2025, enabling Canadian operators to fly ATR -600 aircraft for the first time. This milestone paves the way for Canadian regional airlines to replace ageing turboprops with modern, comfortable ATR aircraft featuring an advanced glass cockpit that optimises flight trajectories and reduces pilot workload, larger cabins and wider seats.

The ATR 72-600 is renowned for its exceptional fuel efficiency, reliability, and ability to operate in challenging environments, including short and unpaved runways. Rise Air’s aircraft is equipped with Pratt & Whitney Canada’s new PW127XT engines, delivering lower maintenance costs and 45% less CO₂ emissions compared to similar-sized regional jets, supporting the carrier’s sustainability goals.

Derek Nice, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rise Air, said: “Introducing the ATR 72-600 is about delivering modern, safe, and reliable air transportation to remote work sites and infrastructure projects that are vital to Saskatchewan’s economy. These operations support employment and GDP growth across the province, particularly in the north. With this aircraft, we can provide our customers with a higher level of comfort and efficiency while continuing to strengthen connectivity in some of Canada’s most challenging environments.”

Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, Chief Executive Officer of ATR, commented: “The ATR 72-600 combines exceptional fuel efficiency with lower operating and maintenance costs, making it the ideal aircraft to operate thin routes profitably and serve the most remote communities.  We’re honoured to see Rise Air pioneer the introduction of the ATR –600 series in Canada, and bring sustainable, reliable, and profitable connectivity to Canada’s most demanding environments, where modern technology truly makes a difference.”

Rise Air’s investment is the largest in its 70-year history and positions the airline to operate the most modern regional aircraft fleet in the country.

ATR has a strong and growing presence in Canada, with more than 60 aircraft operated by 10 airlines across the country, which marks a 50% increase since 2019. Nearly half of the ATR fleet in Canada consists of full freighters, delivering goods ranging from groceries and medicines to fuel in harsh conditions. ATR aircraft have been operating successfully for decades on short and unpaved runways, in extreme cold and icing conditions, and at latitudes close to the Arctic Circle.

The arrival of the ATR 72-600 marks a new chapter, introducing the latest generation technology to a market where the average age of the 30-to-50-seat turboprop fleet is over 30 years, creating significant opportunities for renewal and growth.

Changes to the transportation of animals on scheduled services

We are updating our policies regarding the transportation of animals on our scheduled services to align with legislation. Just as importantly, Rise Air wants to ensure the highest standard of welfare for our customers' pets.

These changes do not affect Service Animals, which are animals individually trained by a person or organization specializing in service dog training to perform a task or tasks that assist a person with a disability related to their disability.

From October 15, 2025:

  1. Animals are not permitted in the cabin area due to limited space and potential allergic reactions, except for service animals that assist customers with disabilities.
  2. No animals are accepted as checked baggage on our Beechcraft 1900D aircraft cargo hold at any time, due to temperature considerations.
  3. Animal Carriers:
    • All animals must be transported in a hard-plastic or metal airline-approved carrier with a leak-proof bottom and no top exit hatch. Wire lattice cages are not acceptable.
    • Animals must be able to stand and turn around comfortably inside the carrier.
    • A maximum of three animals from the same litter may be transported together in one container.
    • The maximum size of the container/kennel (length + width + height) must not exceed 101 x 69 x 76 cm / 40 x 27 x 30 inches.
    • The maximum allowable weight for both the animal and container/kennel must not exceed 75 kg / 165 lbs.
  4. Animals under eight weeks old are not permitted unless accompanied by a letter of exception from a registered veterinarian.
  5. 24 hours’ notice must be given when a reservation is made that a passenger is travelling with a pet (including type and weight of pet and size of kennel). Passengers travelling on a standby ticket are not permitted to transport animals as checked baggage.
  6. The animal must be travelling on the same flight as the passenger, and must check in at least 1 hour prior to departure with the pet.
  7. A handling fee of $75.00 plus GST is charged to the passenger and must be prepaid.
  8. For animal health and welfare reasons, animals will not be permitted as checked baggage each winter between November 1 and March 31, unless transported on an ATR 42/72 and DHC-6 type aircraft.
  9. The following breeds are restricted due to health and welfare risks during transport and will only be accepted for veterinary emergencies where proof of appointment is provided:

Rise Air reserves the right to deny animals as checked baggage, including but not limited to concerns over animal health and welfare.

Cameco and Orano sign historic 15-year agreement with Indigenous owned Rise Air

Saskatoon, SK — August 28, 2025 — Cameco Corporation and Orano Canada Inc. have signed a landmark 15-year agreement, worth approximately $500 million, with Rise Air, an Indigenous-owned airline, to provide workforce transportation services for northern Saskatchewan operations.

This long-term partnership represents the most significant commitment to date between the companies, building on a relationship that began in 1993 with Orano (then COGEMA) and shortly after with Cameco. Previous agreements with Rise Air have typically spanned three years or less.

“Securing a 15-year agreement is truly transformative for Rise Air,” said Derek Nice, CEO of Rise Air. “It means we can plan for the future with confidence — investing in modern equipment, upgrading our facilities, and expanding hiring and training. Most importantly, it allows us to focus on building long-term careers for residents of northern Saskatchewan.”

The agreement underscores Cameco’s and Orano’s confidence in Rise Air as the right partner to meet their workforce transportation needs, which are essential to continued growth in the north.

“We are proud to continue our long-standing relationship with Rise Air, a business owned by the Indigenous communities in the Athabasca Basin and dedicated to serving the North. Air transportation is critical to our operations in northern Saskatchewan. Without the ability to fly workers to our remote sites, we cannot operate. This contract ensures continued access to our sites through an exciting new fleet of aircraft. We are jointly committing to a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership focused on providing safe, reliable transportation for our workforce,” said Tim Gitzel, president and CEO of Cameco.

Orano Canada is committed to maintaining successful operations in northern Saskatchewan, and that is not possible without strong, reliable partnerships in the supply chain.

“For years we have entrusted Rise Air to support our northern mines by safely moving our most precious resource: our people,” said Jim Corman, President and CEO of Orano Canada. “The renewal of this longstanding partnership through the signing of a new contract signifies our confidence in Rise Air and our commitment to continuing to work together, as we prepare for the bright future ahead for the Saskatchewan uranium industry.”

As Saskatchewan’s largest regional airline, Rise Air plays a vital role in connecting northern communities and supporting regional economic development. This new agreement ensures stability, growth, and continued collaboration for decades to come.

“Cameco and Orano have been partners for our communities and for our regional airline for many years,” says Coreen Sayazie, Chief of Black Lake First Nation. “All three of these companies provide job opportunities and economic benefits into the north. By signing this 15-year agreement, it demonstrates a continued long-term investment, and as both a community leader and a community member, I am happy to see this type of long-term commitment formalized in this way.”

Rise Air is 100% Indigenous owned, with Athabasca Basin Development and Prince Albert Development Corp as owners. The ownership collectively impacts 12 First Nations and four municipalities.

“As an investor in Rise Air, Prince Albert Development Corporation is pleased to see this agreement take place,” says Vice Chief Joseph Tsannie, Prince Albert Grand Council. “All three companies have demonstrated a commitment to investing in our people through creative initiatives such as the Dziret’ai Pilot Training Program. Signing this agreement today is the next phase in what has been an ongoing example of companies working together with our northern communities and investing in the north. We greatly appreciate the relationship with Cameco and Orano over many years and look forward to many more to come.”

“Athabasca Basin Development (ABD) has been working together with Cameco and Orano since ABD started over twenty years ago,” says Anne Robillard, Chair of Athabasca Basin Development. “They are both valued partners for many of our investments, and Rise Air is one of them. A 15-year commitment like this helps our companies plan important things like workforce training and strengthens one of our largest investments. When our investments are strong, it helps improve service and build wealth for our communities – a huge win for the Athabasca.”

Santa delivered once again

The 24th annual Santa in the North has delivered smiles across Saskatchewan's north.

Every child received a gift bag containing a book from an Indigenous author or illustrator, a healthy snack-a traditional mandarin-and a candy cane. For children from daycare to elementary school, additional age-appropriate gifts were included in the bags.

Last year, we committed to having Santa attend all schools; however, bad weather prevented our visit to the Hatchet Lake community. This year, we fulfilled that promise. In addition, the Saskatchewan Roughriders Foundation participated in Uranium City, allowing the players to meet the children and deliver mental wellness and literacy programming to all locations.

Rise Air wishes to thank the following partners for joining us to make Christmas in the North even more special: Graham Construction, Orano, Cameco Corporation, Athabasca Basin Development, Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority, Points Athabasca Contracting LP, the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation, Saskatoon Co-op, Fermi Exploration, KPCL Dirt Movers (Kelly Panteluk Construction Ltd.), Uranium City Bulk Fuel, our media partner, Eagle Feather News, and our colleagues at Snowbird Aviation Services and Rise Air.

Literacy provides a lasting gift through the Indigenous-authored and illustrated books given to the children. Athabasca Basin Development, Optek Solutions, Team Drilling, Flyer Electric, Points Athabasca Contracting LP, Points North Group of Companies, Athabasca Basin Security, Long Lake Insurance, and Arctic Beverages LP collaborated to make this happen.

Additional books and gift bags were donated to the school libraries.

Thank you to the following volunteers who made the journey north over the past two weeks: Kian Schaffer-Baker, Jorgen Hus, Peter Godber, Charbel Dabire, Morgan Fleury, Karina Peterson, Ibinabo Abule, Raphael Olaniyi, Bella McMahon, Allison Strong, Natania Bartlett, Anne Gent, and Noah Callaghan.

Dan Gold, Director of Marketing and Stakeholder Relations, stated, "While the weather forced us to change the schedule, Santa, the Roughriders, and volunteers made it to all destinations, delivering more than 1,540 gift bags, reflecting the increase in the number of excited children meeting Santa on the day." Gold continued, "We couldn't do this without our amazing partners, sponsors, volunteers, and, importantly, the schools themselves for supporting this annual event."

To our new sponsors and existing partners, you have made a real difference by bringing smiles to children across the Athabasca Basin. We look forward to Santa in the North 2025 and are delighted that several organizations have already expressed their support for next year. As we approach the holiday season, we give thanks to those who work with us to make Santa in the North a success.

Mr. S. Claus added, "We had a wonderful time with all the children. Their energy and happiness were the fuel we needed to bring our 'A-game'. I learned that phrase from my new friends from Regina-Go Riders."

There were many pictures given to Santa this year and here are just a few!

Dziret’ái Pilot Training Program

The Dziret’ái Pilot Training Program is a fully-funded initiative to support Indigenous candidates from northern Saskatchewan in becoming professional pilots.

The application phase for the Dziret’ái Pilot Training Program has now closed. All completed applications will be reviewed by the screening committee before shortlisted applicants are invited to interview.

Our mission is to provide candidates with the necessary expertise, hands-on training, and confidence for a successful career, while also making a positive impact on the communities in northern Saskatchewan.

Upon graduation, each student is guaranteed a First Officer position with Rise Air.

The program addresses systemic issues that have limited opportunities for northern residents, particularly Indigenous residents, and women, and creates a pathway to success.

The program will initially target Athabasca Basin residents.

Program graduates will have earned their private and commercial pilot licenses with the following qualifications:

  • Night rating.

  • Multi-engine rating.

  • Instrument rating.

  • Intermediate Air Transport Rating (IATRA).

  • King Air type rating or alternatively Twin Otter rating and float rating.

The Dziret’ái pilot training program focuses on student success and job creation by providing skills and education upgrading, pilot training and mentoring and guaranteed jobs as First Officers with Rise Air upon graduation.

In September 2024, fifteen (15) individuals will be selected to participate in the Elevated Skills Program – the fully funded skills and upgrading component of the program from mid-September to December after which ten (10) students will be identified and selected to move into the pilot training program starting January 2025.

We will provide full funding to empower them to complete their Commercial Pilot’s License (CPL) and multi-IFR rating and either King Air or Twin Otter type rating so that they can begin their pilot journey with Rise Air.

The pilot training program will take place at Mitchinson Flight Centre in Saskatoon. Participants will receive transportation to Saskatoon from their home communities, as well as accommodation in either one or two-bedroom apartments for the duration of the program.

Scheduled breaks during training will allow students to return to their home communities for events such as pilgrimage, Christmas, Easter, and winter carnivals. Rise Air will cover the transportation costs during these breaks.

Cultural supports are integrated into the program, including the presence of Elders and Knowledge-Keepers in Saskatoon and invitations to participate in events like the FSIN Cultural Celebration and Powwow in 2025.

Additionally, students will have the opportunity to engage in social activities at Rise Air, including Friends and Family Day 2025 and monthly staff luncheons during the summer, subject to the training schedule.

A formal graduation ceremony is planned for June 2026.

All necessary uniforms and supplies for the program will be provided to the students.

Ya’thi Néné and Prince Albert Grand Council will work directly with program applicants to secure funding to assist with living expenses.

If the student is unable to complete their training within the stipulated timeframe due to circumstances beyond their control, e.g., weather, illness, or other acceptable reasons, arrangements may be made to extend the period.

Rise Air Welcomes Second ATR 42-500 to Fleet

Rise Air announced the addition of a second ATR 42-500 aircraft to its fleet of five ATRs. The aircraft, registration C-GRYI, will primarily serve the airline's workforce transportation routes.

This latest addition complements the airline's first ATR 42-500, C-FHBX which is dedicated to scheduled services in northern Saskatchewan.

"The arrival of this second ATR 42-500 in Saskatoon is a significant step in our ongoing efforts to enhance our service levels throughout Saskatchewan's north," said Derek Nice, Rise Air’s President and CEO. "We are excited to introduce this quieter, faster aircraft to more passengers across our network."

The ATR 42-500 is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft known for its efficiency, reliability, and performance. It offers a comfortable cabin with a wider aisle, larger overhead storage bins and greater noise suppression over older models. This investment is an endorsement of the Saskatchewan aviation sector and the strong and stable economy.
