Aviation Superfan Celebrates 19th Birthday at Rise Air

Alex Adams, a lifelong aviation enthusiast, celebrated his 19th birthday by making a special trip to Rise Air in Saskatoon.

Adams, who grew up in Uranium City, Saskatchewan, has been fascinated by flying since he was a young child. He estimates that he has traveled on Rise Air flights more than 1,000 times.

“I love everything about flying,” said Adams. “I love the feeling of being up in the air, and I love seeing the world from a different perspective.”

Adams moved to Saskatoon three years ago to complete his schooling. He is currently a student at Mount Royal Collegiate and is set to graduate in June 2024. After graduation, he hopes to pursue a career in aviation. His dream is to become a pilot for Rise Air.
“I know it will take a lot of hard work to qualify, but I’m willing to put in the time and energy to make my dream a reality,” said Adams.

“I’ve been flying virtual aircraft on Microsoft Flight Simulator for years, and I even run my own virtual version of Rise Air.”

Tracy Young-McLean, Vice President of Human Resources and Corporate Services, said that Adams would be a welcome addition to the Rise Air family regardless of his position.

“Alex is passionate and knowledgeable,” said Young-McLean. “He has volunteered at the aviation museum and was part of our summer student program working in our facilities department in 2023. Young-McLean added, “We are excited to see what he accomplishes in the future.”

Rise Air is 100 per cent Indigenous-owned by the communities it serves across northern Saskatchewan. The airline is committed to increasing Indigenous employment and representation across the organization.

Santa in the North 2023 – a year of firsts

Santa in the North 2023 - a year of firsts

The 23rd annual Santa in the North trip, which took place at the beginning of December, was a tremendous success, and we owe it all to the unwavering support of our partners, sponsors, and communities. Thanks to their generosity, we were able to spread holiday cheer by delivering gifts to children across the Athabasca Basin.

This heartwarming endeavour, months in the making, saw Santa's journey through Black Lake, Stony Rapids, Fond du Lac, and Uranium City.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Saskatchewan Roughriders for their invaluable contribution, bringing aboard Jorgen Hus and Brett Lauther as new helpers for Santa. We are truly thankful to the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation for making this collaboration possible.

Under the exceptional leadership of Kristy Jackson from Athabasca Basin Development, we were able to ensure that all the books gifted to students were authored by Indigenous writers, a meaningful shift from previous years.

Each book and gift was thoughtfully sorted by grade in advance, ensuring their age-appropriateness.

Despite encountering challenging weather conditions that prevented us from reaching Wollaston Lake, we were heartened by the local Santa's ability to personally distribute gifts, books, and healthy snacks to the children of that community.

This year marked a special first as Rise Air’s Santa made his inaugural visit to Uranium City, directly delivering books and gifts to the school, a departure from previous practices of delivery to the airport.

We are immensely grateful to our gold-level sponsors, Cameco, Graham Construction, and Orano, whose unwavering support made this initiative possible.

Additionally, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to our other exceptional sponsors: SIGA - Sharing Success, Athabasca Basin Development, SSR Mining, Snowbird Aviation Services, The Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation, Optek Solutions, Eagle Feather News, Symmetry PR, and the team at Rise Air. Their support has truly made a positive impact on the lives of the children in these communities.

Santa in the North 2023 – Coming Soon

On December 4-6, 2023, Santa and friends will be traveling to several northern communities to deliver almost 1400 gifts to children living in the Athabasca Basin region.

• Father Porte Memorial School, Black Lake, Dec 4

• Stony Rapids Community School, Dec 4.

• Father Megret Elementary, Wollaston Lake, Dec 5.

• Father Megret High School, Wollaston Lake, Dec 5.

• Father Gamache Memorial School, Fond Du Lac, Dec 6.

Dan Gold, Director, Communications and Stakeholder Relations: “This is a very special time of year because we work closely with partners and sponsors to make this event special for every child that we visit.

There are more sponsors to be announced, but today we would like to formally recognize the gold level sponsors: Cameco, Graham Construction and Orano, without these major sponsors, Santa in the North would not be able to proceed.

We’re featuring a couple of firsts on this 23rd anniversary of Santa in the North. Firstly, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are sending players to be Santa’s not-so-little helpers. Secondly, Uranium City is getting their own dedicated visit from Santa on December 12.

Traditionally the presents for Uranium City had been delivered by our crew to the community. From 2023 onwards Santa will always visit along with the presents.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Athabasca Basin Development and partners for sponsoring an Indigenous authored book for every child.

Multiple teachers from the Athabasca Basin have told us that for many of the children we visit, this will be the only gift package they receive this Christmas.

Thank you to our sponsors

Celebrating Diversity at the Lac La Ronge Regional Pride 2023

Pride Heart

The Lac La Ronge Pride Parade & Festival happens in June every year to celebrate and push for equality and human rights. Colleagues from Rise Air and Snowbird Aviation Services joined together to support 2SLGBTQIA+ community members through Pride.

2S (two-spirit) refers to a person who identifies as having both a masculine and a feminine spirit, and is used by some Indigenous people to describe their sexual, gender and/or spiritual identity.

Thank you to everyone who came to say hello at our stand. To the organizers, volunteers and performers, thank you for this incredible event for all. It’s wonderful to see so many people sharing positive posts from the event!

Why does Pride matter?

  • People are still attacked because of their real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity
  • Prides are an opportunity to challenge intolerant legislation around the world
  • Rights can never be taken for granted
  • Prides contribute to positively changing hearts and minds
  • Prides are empowering

The Paul Mulrooney Memorial Award of Excellence award, sponsored by the Air Transport Association of Canada (ATAC) is presented to the employee of an operator member company who has demonstrated progressive advancement to and within management positions. Recipients of this award must have demonstrated excellence in their positions, demonstrated leadership in team management, have honoured the highest ethical standards, have maintained the highest industry safety standards, and who must be willing to act as an ambassador in the promotion of our industry and show compassion by supporting the pathways through education for youth choosing aviation as a career. The award provides for a grant to be made to an employee of the recipient’s company who is pursuing a career in aviation.

The grant was made possible as Carla Wayman, Rise Air’s Director of Flight Operations was the recipient of the award this past year.

Cori and Jaden receive $1000 each from the ATAC bursary and a matched amount from Rise Air for a total of $2000 awarded to each.

Carla Wayman said “Congratulations to Cori and Jaden, this bursary is provided to them in recognition of their work performance and diligence in pursuing their careers. I hope that they will pick up the torch and act as ambassadors in the promotion of our industry and support other young women and men pursuing aviation as a career.

I wish you both the best of luck in pursuing your dreams”.

Rise Air joins Keewatin Community Development Association’s annual Fly In Career Fair

Rise Air - KCDA Career Fair

Standing shoulder to shoulder with Orano, Cameco, Athabasca Health Authority, RCMP, QM Points, Athabasca Basin Development, and other local firms, Rise Air joined in supporting Keewatin Community Development Association’s (KCDA) annual fly in career fair. This fair is designed for Indigenous youth and older graduates seeking employment within the communities of Black Lake, Wollaston Lake, and Fond du Lac.

Rise Air - KCDA Career Fair

At each school the event is split in to two sessions, one for younger students and the other for those between grade 10 and 12. This gives the different age groups more time with each of the exhibitors. The older students can ask career-specific questions, while the younger ones can ask more broadly about the world of work and life after grade 12.

Rise Air’s part in sponsoring the fair Included planning support and freight shipping. Supporting the dreams and ambitions of our youth is incredibly powerful and we were honoured to provide transportation for these organizations and their representatives into the north to inspire the next generations.

Students listening to Allison Strong

Tracy Young-McLean, Rise Air’s Vice President, Human Resources and Corporate Services said, “We are thrilled to collaborate with the KCDA. We’re 100 per cent owned by the communities that we serve, and we have a clear goal to employ more Indigenous community members.

We want community members to know that we are committed to increasing the number of Indigenous employees from the Athabasca region through our recruitment practices. A key part of this is being present in the north to have conversations with community members about the opportunities that we have. We welcome Indigenous people with all levels of education and experience to help build a more inclusive and representative airline.

We are also glad to see that SIIT, Northlands College and FNU were all present at the fair to help people plan and actualize personal goals to achieve everything from professional certificates to degrees and more”.

Cara Greyeyes

Cara Greyeyes, KCDA Program Manager, “I feel that we’ve had tremendous success, and I believe that the successes that we have is from the powerful messages our young professionals bring to the youth about education and we’ve had so much support from the local community as well as the Athabasca Basin companies.

Daniel Redekopp

Daniel Redekopp, RCMP, “All of the events has gone very well, in my opinion. I enjoyed it. This is about the fourth or fifth time that I’ve done this event and I always look forward to it. The kids’ take away is just the opportunities that are out there for them. I never had something like this when I went through high school, so doing this for these students is great for them to have that opportunity”.

Glen Sigstad

Glen Sigstad, Team Drilling, “it was great to see students that are interested in careers and opportunities out there. It’s great to see the knowledge they have in their interest in certain careers, certain trades and stuff like that. Also get their opinions on what they actually want to do when they grow”.

Kristy Jackson and Allison Strong

Allison Strong (right in photo), Athabasca Basin Development, “What did they gain from coming to this event? I think it’s confidence because they were asked to ask questions and step out of their comfort zone. Some of them, maybe they’re not used to speaking to strangers in a professional sense.

Paiton Tegstrom

Paiton Tegstrom, Northlands College, “I think it’s important to have this event because it’s absolutely imperative to meet communities where they are at. It’s not always accessible for people to come down south and go to school. So, it’s really important for us to know that there are options within our communities and also build those relationships that we can hopefully bring in more programing, where it is needed and what’s needed”.

Emma Blondeau, Flyer Electric

Emma Blondeau, Flyer Electric, “It was great to speak with many students all ages to learn about their passion and to talk about the different education paths and opportunities available to them. Being part in helping navigate the endless opportunities by speaking with the students was empowering because they are the leaders of tomorrow. When you enjoy what you do then everyday is a great day which I felt was important to express to every student to let each one know that they can pursue their passion into a career.

Dan Gold, Rise Air “This was an incredible event to be a part of. As you looked around the room, you could see the engaged students listening to the inspirational stories from the on-stage speakers Allison Strong, Dene Robillard, and Brianda Robillard.

Depending on the grade of the student, they asked very different questions. Many did not know that their community was an owner of Rise Air and quite a few thought that pilot jobs were the only ones we had as an airline.

When the students listed their interests from computers to math, art, and science, it was important to show them that their skills were ideal for different parts of an airline operation. From IT, administration, and management to engineering and being a pilot. It’s important to show a direct link between success at school and the opportunities that they can achieve”.

We are committed to returning to the KCDA Flying Career Fair in 2024 and beyond!
